FOR HEADACHES OR PAIN:

It is ok to take Tylenol (acetaminophen) 325mg 1-2 tabs every 4 hours as needed. DO NOT TAKE ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen or Excedrin.

HEALTHY EATING:

Make sure to eat from the 5 main food groups every day. This includes: grains, fruits, vegetables, protein foods and dairy products. Drink at least 8 glasses of water, milk, or juice daily. Try to drink 3 cups of milk daily to get an adequate amount of calcium needed. Little to no caffeine intake is recommended. You should only need 300 extra calories per day while pregnant.

AVOID:

Raw or undercooked meat and eggs, unpasteurized milk and cheese, alfalfa sprouts, shellfish, albacore tuna, and swordfish. Deli meat should also be avoided unless it’s cooked.

EXERCISE:

If you’re able, we encourage you to exercise 30 minutes daily. Walking, swimming and aerobics are all good forms of exercise while you are pregnant. If you cannot carry on a conversation while exercising, you’re working out too hard.

DO NOT:

Drink alcohol, smoke or use drugs

Avoid indoor painting, amusement rides, horseback riding, hot tubs, Jet Ski, ATVs and go carts.

Dye your hair (highlighting is ok after the 1st trimester)

Change kitty litter or breathe in or change rodent bedding

DO:

Wear gloves when gardening.

See your dentist regularly and take care of your teeth.

Get a Tdap during pregnancy and the inactivate influenza vaccine during the flu season and.

Wear your seatbelt correctly with the lap belt below the belly and shoulder belt over the chest and shoulder.

OK:

Acupuncture and massage therapy are ok if the Provider knows you’re pregnant.

Manicures and pedicures are ok as long as there is good ventilation.

TRAVEL:

Travel is usually OK during pregnancy until the 35th week assuming there are no complications. Make sure to walk and move every 2 hours while riding or driving to circulate the blood in your legs. Use the restroom and keep drinking fluids. Let your provider know of travel plans when getting past the 24th week of pregnancy.

CALL YOUR PROVIDER:

If you experience cramping associated with bleeding or severe pain.

If you have severe one-sided lower abdominal pain.

If you experience a headache that is different and worse than any previous headache and isn’t resolved with Tylenol and fluids.
