Diabetes Care & Education
When you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you may be facing a lot of changes to your lifestyle including changes to your diet, medications, physical activity, and more. Our diabetes experts at Faith Regional Health Services will help you to learn how to live well with diabetes and manage your condition so you can live a healthy and active life.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is characterized by high levels of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It may be that your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin – a hormone involved in turning your food into glucose, which your body uses for energy. Another possibility is that your body isn’t using insulin effectively.
The result is too much sugar in your blood which can harm your organs and lead to serious problems.
Types of Diabetes
- Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
- Type 1 Diabetes occurs when your pancreas doesn’t make insulin at all or doesn’t make enough insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t use insulin correctly.
- Gestational Diabetes occurs when you have high blood sugar during pregnancy.
Caring for Your Diabetes
At Faith Regional, you’ll benefit from a team of specialists and medical services to help you get control and manage your diabetes. Your primary care provider will oversee your diabetes care but may refer you to a specialist if needed. You may be referred to a:
- Endocrinologist (hormones and metabolism doctor)
- Ophthalmologist (eye doctor)
- Podiatrist (foot doctor)
Wound Care for Diabetes
Every year, more than 1 million people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers. Our Advanced Wound Center helps treat chronic and non-healing wounds.
Nutrition Counseling
Good nutrition can help you feel physically great, and it can also help improve your mental health, energy levels, and overall well-being. A healthy diet can help you live longer and lower your risks for obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. If you have a chronic disease, eating healthy can help manage your condition and prevent further complications.
Our registered dietitians teach you about proper nutrition, tailor a custom eating plan to fit your lifestyle, and help you build healthy habits to last a lifetime.
