Breast Reduction

Breast Surgery Risks

Breast reduction surgery is safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon at Faith Regional. Any surgery presents some risks, such as infection, bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, or other complications. Possible risks include:

  • Breast asymmetry
  • Breasts too firm
  • Change in nipple size
  • Changes in sensation or pigmentation
  • Difficulty breastfeeding
  • Fat necrosis (death of fatty tissue beneath the skin)
  • Fluid buildup
  • Irregular shape
  • Need for revision surgery

Your doctor will help you weigh these and other considerations based on your condition and procedure.

Breast Reduction Surgery

Before breast reduction, you’ll schedule an appointment with your surgeon to evaluate your health and condition. This visit may include a physical exam, medical history review, and other individualized evaluation. The doctor will tell you how to prepare and what to expect, including recovery and follow-up care.

Most breast reductions can be done as outpatient surgery in a Faith Regional surgery center. Surgery may take about three hours. Before surgery, you can ask your surgeon about any last-minute questions or concerns.

  • You may get medication, including something to help you feel comfortable. You’ll receive IV sedation or general anesthesia, delivered through a mask.
  • The plastic surgeon makes one or more incisions as discussed during initial office visits. Surgical methods vary depending on breast size, condition, and treatment plans
  • In some instances, where breast size is mostly fatty tissue without a lot of excess skin, the doctor can use liposuction to help diminish breast size.
  • The surgeon repositions the nipple, which remains attached to its blood and nerve supply. If necessary, as discussed in pre-surgery consultation, the surgeon may reduce the size of the areola.
  • The surgeon removes breast tissue and lifts and shapes breasts. For certain conditions such as large, drooping breasts, the surgeon may need to remove and transplant the nipple and areola (free nipple graft), so they’re positioned higher on the breast.
  • The surgeon closes incisions, layering sutures deep within the breast which helps shape and support your breasts. The doctor may use surgical sutures, adhesive, or tape to close the skin before applying dressings or bandages.
  • Once the surgery is completed on both breasts, you’re monitored in the recovery room as you awaken.

After Breast Reduction

Your doctor will evaluate your condition and discuss these and other steps:

  • You’ll receive instructions and medications to promote healing and lower infection risk.
  • You can wear an elastic bandage or support bra to limit swelling and support breasts as they heal.
  • Your doctor will tell you about healing and recovery, including warning signs of infection or other complications. It’s important to report unusual symptoms to your doctor right away.

You should see improved breast shape and size immediately after your procedure.
