Is it Time for a Knee Replacement?

According to the American College of Rheumatology, about 790 thousand total knee replacements are done in the United States each year. So how do you know if you need to get one done?

Knee replacement surgery involves replacing damaged parts of your knee joint to help treat pain and stiffness. Depending on the damage to your knee, your surgeon may suggest a total knee replacement, or a partial knee replacement.

Signs You May Need a Knee Replacement

On average, knee replacements are done on people who are between the ages of 50 and 80, however depending on the damage to your knee or pain you are experiencing, your provider may recommend it sooner.

You may qualify for knee replacement surgery if:

  • You struggle with arthritic pain.
  • Nonsurgical treatments are no longer effectively treating your pain.
  • Pain prevents you from doing normal daily activities.
  • You have severe pain throughout the day.
  • You are unable to sleep due to pain when resting.
  • Your knee is swollen or deformed.
  • Your knee feels unstable when standing or walking.
  • You are having trouble going up and down stairs or walking on uneven ground.

What to Expect

If you qualify for knee replacement surgery, your orthopedic team will work with you to build an individualized treatment plan. This plan will cover everything from pre-surgery education to post-surgery rehabilitation.

During your surgery, your surgeon will use minimally invasive techniques and advanced technology, including robotic assisted surgery, to replace the damaged parts of your knee with artificial parts. In most cases, you will be able to go home on the day of surgery.

After your surgery, your surgeon will recommend a physical therapist near you so you can complete the necessary rehabilitation programs to have a successful recovery.
