Innovative Treatment Options for Pain Management
Chronic back, neck, nerve, and other pain can make work feel impossible, stop you from doing activities that you love, and can even lead to stress and trouble sleeping.
One treatment option that is available for chronic pain is called electrical nerve stimulation. There are two types of electrical nerve stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and spinal cord stimulation (SCS).
How Does it Work?
Both peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) work by having a small pulse generator send electrical pulses to the nerves. These pulses interfere with the nerves that make you feel pain.
If you are interested in electrical nerve stimulation treatment, our pain management specialists, Dr. Ihsan Balkaya and Dr. Robert Prince, will meet with you to discuss the risks, benefits, and steps of implementing the nerve stimulating device.
Electrical nerve stimulation treatments work in two phases, the trial period and permanent installation. The trial period for nerve stimulation lasts approximately 3-15 days and allows our specialists to monitor your pain relief during typical day-to-day activities. The trial period also allows you to decide if you are satisfied with nerve stimulation pain relief before getting a permanent system installed.
Can Nerve Stimulation Help Me?
Electrical nerve stimulation is commonly used to treat chronic pain when other medical treatments haven’t worked. Some common conditions where electrical nerve stimulation may be a treatment option include:
- Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)
- Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Phantom limb pain
- Angina
- Ischemic limb pain
- Multiple sclerosis
The goal of electrical nerve stimulation is to provide long-term pain relief with improvement to your quality of life and improved daily function.
